independent people

Shortly afterwards it started raining, very innocently at first, but the sky was packed tight with cloud and gradually the drops grew bigger and heavier, until it was autumn’s dismal rain that was falling —rain that seemed to fill the entire world with its leaden beat, rain suggestive in its dreariness of everlasting waterfalls between the planets, rain that thatched the heavens with drabness and brooded oppressively over the whole countryside, like a disease, strong in the power of its flat, unvarying monotony, its smothering heaviness, its cold, unrelenting cruelty. Smoothly, smoothly it fell, over the whole shire, over the fallen marshgrass, over the troubled lake, the iron-grey gravel flats, the sombre mountain above the croft, smudging out every prospect. And the heavy, hopeless, interminable beat wormed its way into every crevice in the house, lay like a pad of cotton wool over the ears, and embraced everything, both near and far, in its compass, like an unromantic story from life itself that has not rhythm, no crescendo, no climax, but which is nevertheless overwhelming in its scope, terrifying in its significance.  HKL

how to come back from that

Back to the life you once had, before you knew of this alternate realm of existence.

It’s never quite the same.

sea

Come see me. Elope with me to the forest where the wilderness will be our eternal honeymoon.

May my kisses and adoration fly to you across the cold, unfeeling sea that separates us, my darling.

We have so much in common, it’s like we’re electrons with identical quantum numbers. I guess that also means we can never be in the same atom together.

You confirm De Broglie’s particle-wave duality theories. Heisenberg and Schrödinger would be proud of your elusiveness.

You’re like the ray that’s reflected off the top surface of a thin film, whereas I’m reflected from the bottom surface. I’m always half a step behind you. I guess we’re doomed to destructive interference.

We’re too big for the strong or weak forces. We’re too balanced for electromagnetic attraction. We’re too small for gravitational attraction; even if we weren’t you have enough kinetic energy to achieve escape speed from me.

Every word you give me is like a quantum of ultraviolet. But I’m outside of the convergence limit, and you’re dropping further away to the nucleus.

Every physical phenomenon reminds me of you. But my infatuation with you is a force, a vector directed at you, and it’s pushing you away.
